Workshops.  

Preparing, packing, schlepping--all part of the necessary requirements for having one.

I'm not gonna lie to you. 

 If I had a personal assistant I would hand those jobs over so quick--- I would run the risk of whiplash:))

HOWEVER, lacking an assitant (Ed doesn't count)...

If I didn't prep, pack and schlepp I would be forfeiting...

For instance, this past week I got to hang out several evenings with Kathleen O'Neil Stevenson, talking about things like....water based oil paints and which ones are the cadillacs, where can I find those neat containers she has her art supplies stashed in....and of course a side trip to the local art store to check out paint colors like they were new shades of nail polish:))  

And then the 18 artists who gathered into Kathleen's Renaissance Gallery in Carmel were such a talented , fun loving group!  Getting to hear their stories of when and why they started painting, and how much they simply loved the doing of it--just such a gift to listen in!

AND did I mention....they were really talented?!

Melody created an awesome color chart based on my palette. 

 I threatened to steal it, but had to settle for a photograph.  

Just too many artists with their eye on me...dang it!!

Lots of room to spread out in Kathleen's inspiring gallery space. 

 Love how she had my paintings hanging out in her shabby chic chairs.  

Again, wanted to steal chairs for my studio, but too many artists watching.

Foiled again!!

Flowers in France, paintings in Paris.  That's just how it went down this past week:)!  If familiarity breeds contempt, then I was in deep trouble, because 2/3's  of these artists were, as I like to call 'em, repeat offenders (that's what can happen when you hold a workshop where you live...).

Some have painted with me at so many workshops I am loosing track...and control I might add.  I threatened to throw the rowdy ones out, but quickly realized, due to the influence of the seasoned group on my new tenderlings, that I would have no one left in the Paris workshop, so I just kept painting and tried not to look over my shoulder....

For that reason I am holding them responsible for the fact that I have no group photos of their paintings the first two days, except a few that snuck into one of the larger shots.  Do not be deceived by the demure looks of this group of ladies...they posed nicely for the photos but even  the  city police had to stop and turn on their blue lights when we were outside taking our group photo, that's all I'm sayin'. 

I think it is obvious that I am going to have to start screening workshop participants.

Glenna, Pris, Ann, Ann, Kay, Barbara, Sandy, Vicki, Claudia, Pat, Ann Marie, Brenda, Vicki, Tricia, and Me...and one more Ann who left (escaped) a few hours early.

And yes, that is 4 Ann's, and 2 Vicki's.  I even had a Pat and a Tricia.  But not Patricia.  I just never caught a break from beginning to end.

Call me crazy, but I am having a workshop here same time next year---and so help me Hannah, some of them have already signed up for it! 

I figure anything can happen in a year. 

 People can change. 

Eddie's can move out and get their own place.

I am, if nothing else,

an optimist:))

P.S.  You can probably tell, I had a great time and love this group of women/artists.  I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do.  Thank you  girls for bringing such joy, laughter, and focus to this workshop---you were awesome!

  Feelin' at home.   Knowing you can kick your shoes off, loosen your belt, and prop your feet up on the nearest piece of furniture.  Few things in life feel quite as delicious.

I rec'd a letter from a fellow artist this week who lives in Italy.  He was telling me about it and said..."... a breathtaking place...therefore, as someone said (Hawthorne?) ...say a lot abut a little and a little about a lot..."

A drive through my country, late afternoon, weak sunlight, I look for signs of beauty among trees now baring themselves and green blue grass yielding to winter's cast of gray.  A reprieve for a soul filled up with so many images.  I work at breaking the cycle of hand-wringing lists of things yet to do, to bring myself into this present moment.  Window down, freshly opened bag of Frito's and a French jazz CD singing to me.  Slowly, my mind allows me to savor the surroundings, to fill its restless self up with real life.  Painting does that for me in a different way.  Allowing my soul to reach out for the unknown beauty that my heart knows is there but my eyes don't always see. 

Allowing.  That's a ponderous word.  Allow yourself today to do what your heart calls to do.  Simply allow.  You  might just amaze yourself...:)

Over the centuries, you have to wonder--how many articles of clothing have swung in the breeze and how the styles of what was swinging has changed.  The minuet, the waltz, swing dancing....and ahem...line dancing.  Styles of dance and styles of clothing change many times.  Wonder what will be hanging off those lines 100 years from now???

After giving it some serious thought I have concluded that the only way I can hang laundry out my window is if I  move to Rome.  Or Florence.  Or Provence.  Somehow flaunting  your undies from a one level, 3 bedroom, brick  ranch  just doesn't have the same feel...in fact, I'm not sure, but I think it might get you arrested.

....I'm just sayin'. 

That's my excuse.  What's yours??

Tip for the day:  Go green...move to Italy and let Mother nature dry your unmentionables....

How is it that even the most mundane thing--- like laundry--- can fold  itself into a thing of beauty when surrounded by flowers and stirred with the fresh breezes of Provence.  Truly some of the most simple things in life hold within them such incredible gifts.  The smell of blanchisserie fraiche (fresh laundry) brings a sense of wholeness and  hope--a reminder of the goodness of life. 

So today, as you remove the clothes pins from your laundry on your French balcony--take time to bury your nose in the scent of a beautiful life...who said doing laundry couldn't be fun..:)))

Painting this coastal balcony in Italy reminds me--- how precious each little piece of the world that we make ours, actually is.



Hands, not as young as they one time were, spreading out a well worn, but well loved cloth on a table for two.



Plants watered and spoken too.



Deep breaths taken of sun warmed air.



We bring the gift of ourselves to everything we touch. Perhaps that is what makes me so happy when I see these minuto balconies with their arms so full of such things that we humans find precious. What each of us has that goes into all these things---that thing that fills all the space and then some....



Amore....Love!











May you have a love of a day.











May the plants nod their heads to you when you pass.











May the birds sing their song just for you.





Just for the day, may you be infinitely aware!
